The weather on Mount Kilimanjaro can vary significantly due to its diverse climate zones and high altitude. Here is an overview of the weather conditions you can expect on Kilimanjaro:

Base of the Mountain (Moshi and Arusha)

  • The base of Mount Kilimanjaro, where most climbers start their journey from towns like Moshi and Arusha, generally experiences a warm and tropical climate.
  • Temperatures in these towns typically range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) throughout the year.
  • Moshi and Arusha can experience short rains from November to December and long rains from March to May.

Climbing Altitude Zones

  • As climbers ascend Kilimanjaro, they pass through several distinct climate zones, each with its own weather characteristics.

Rainforest Zone (800m – 2,800m / 2,600ft – 9,200ft)

  • The lower slopes of Kilimanjaro are covered in lush rainforests, where rainfall is abundant.
  • Expect warm and humid conditions with frequent rainfall, especially during the rainy seasons.
  • Temperatures in this zone range from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F).

Heath and Moorland Zone (2,800m – 4,000m / 9,200ft – 13,100ft)

  • This zone is characterized by heath, grasslands, and moorlands.
  • Temperatures are cooler than the rainforest zone, ranging from 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F).
  • Rainfall is less frequent compared to the rainforest zone, but it can still occur, especially during the rainy seasons.

Alpine Desert Zone (4,000m – 5,000m / 13,100ft – 16,400ft)

  • As climbers ascend higher, they enter the alpine desert zone, where the landscape becomes more barren and rocky.
  • This zone experiences very little rainfall, with dry and arid conditions prevailing.
  • Temperatures can vary greatly, ranging from -10°C to 15°C (14°F to 59°F) during the day, with colder temperatures at night.

Arctic Zone (Above 5,000m / 16,400ft)

  • The summit zone of Kilimanjaro, known as the Arctic or Glacial zone, is characterized by snow and ice.
  • Temperatures in this zone can drop significantly, with daytime temperatures ranging from -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F) and even colder temperatures at night.
  • Weather conditions at the summit are unpredictable, with the potential for snow, high winds, and freezing temperatures.

Weather Patterns

  • Kilimanjaro experiences two main rainy seasons:
    • Long rains: From March to May, with April typically being the wettest month.
    • Short rains: From November to December, with November often seeing increased precipitation.
  • The dry seasons are generally from January to February and June to October, with clearer skies and lower chances of rainfall.
  • Despite the general patterns, weather on Kilimanjaro can be unpredictable, and climbers should be prepared for a range of conditions at any time of the year.

Importance of Layering

  • Given the varied weather conditions and temperature changes as you climb, it’s essential to dress in layers.
  • This allows you to adjust your clothing to stay comfortable and maintain proper body temperature as you ascend and descend.

Weather Updates

  • Climbing companies often provide daily weather updates to guide climbers on their journey.
  • Weather conditions can impact the safety and success of the climb, so it’s crucial to heed the advice of experienced guides and follow their recommendations.

Whether you choose to climb during the dry season for clearer skies or during the rainy season for fewer crowds, being prepared for the diverse weather conditions on Mount Kilimanjaro is key to a successful and safe summit attempt. Always check the latest weather forecasts and be ready to adapt to changing conditions during your climb.
